Mali

I would like to explore Mali in this world. The landlocked West African country of Mali is mostly desert or semi desert.

This country gained independence from French in 1960.
In the 1980s economic woes worsened by drought and famine led to deregulation and privatization.
Desertification forces nomadic herders south to the subsistence-farming belt. With increased gold mining operations, Mali is becoming a major gold exporter.
The country has a population of 14million people with 46 literacy percent. French, Bambara, numerous African languages are spoken in this country. Life expectancy is 45 years old; much lower than those of Japan.

The other day, I read an article about people in this country do not even know the transparence of water. They take it for granted that the water is always cloudy things.

The reason why I chose this country is Mali is the one of the poorest countries in the world. I know how much I am helpless for them, but I think I will be able to change my way of thinking and living.

Picture Day for Seizin-Shiki!!!

I am so exciting that Seizin-shiki is coming in about 2 months!!

Book Report: Stargirl

Have you ever read "Stargirl"? I really love the book!! Here is a bookreport that I wrote for IE Core.

Summary:
This is a story about a young girl named Stargirl coming to high school, Mica Area High School, where the story teller goes to. The main characters that appear in this story are Leo, Kevin (Leo’s friend) and Stargirl.
Stargirl was home schooling until she came to Mica Area High School, and she was a little different from everyone. She wore unusual clothes like kimonos, long Pioneer-like dresses, Indian buckskin, miniskirts with green tights; she plays her ukulele at lunch. Her normal was different from others. Also, Stargirl is not her real name. She thought that Stargirl was best for her and changed her name by herself. She changes names when she feels like changing it.
She was getting some kind of attention from every student in school at first. When the time passed, she became popular because of her joyful and cheerful attitudes towards everyone. When she joined the cheerleading club and cheered at the basketball game, the Mica High started winning. She became popular and liked by everyone because of this happening. Everyone liked having her in their classes and school. Students began to copy Stargirl’s good deeds.
She cheered her team at a ball game, cheering for the other team also. She was just cheering wherever the ball went to. However, one happening changed the entire students’ attitude towards her. Stargirl was suddenly shunned for everything by her friends. It was when she ran and went to take care of the injured enemy during the basketball game. She made booing to occur and it was hard to understand for everyone about her unusual behavior. Yet, she did not stop those things even though she became unpopular. She just did not change herself to be the same like other girls.
When half year passed, Leo starts to realize that he has fallen in love with her. He could not stop thinking about her all day and night. Then, Leo and Stargirl started to go around together but the attitudes from students toward Leo and Stargirl was undesirable. This was when she was still hated by everyone, which made Leo to be the victim too when he was with her. He did not get any greeting from his friends at all just because he was being together with her. He did not like the way he was being treated and thought about it. He told Stargirl how she is different from the others in a bad way and convinced her to be normal like other girls. Indeed, she turned normal, being Susan not Stargirl. She wore make-up, wearing jeans and t-shirts just like others. However, even though she became normal like the other girls, it did not change the others attitude towards her. She tried so hard being normal but it did not work.
In the end In the end of the year, she attends the dance party by herself as a Stargirl, having a lot of fun as she could and after that, she moves out of Mica, Arizona without any notice. No one knows where she went.

Literary Analysis:
1) Setting: In a city called Mica, Arizona, USA and most of the story takes place at a high school, Mica Area High School.
2) Point of view: The story is told in the first person perspective.(Leo Borlock)
3) Conflict: There is a conflict between being famous by trying to be normal vs.
4) Climax: Susan being back to Stargirl again. This is where you can also see the conflict and the irony.
5) Symbol: “to be popular” is the symbol in this story.
6) Irony: being normal like others would not make you a famous one at all. Stargirl had the chance to feel it by herself by trying to act normal.
7) Theme: to be yourself. No matter how others are different, you need to be yourself not being affected by any other. Stargirl was being herself all the time even though she was hated by everyone.

Evaluation:
By reading this story, I felt the fragileness of first love and the hardness of trying to fit in to the popular crowd. I also felt the ugliness of social group thing; Stargirl’s kindness, individuality, self expression, and creativity were frowned upon because of difference. I would recommend this book especially to teenagers who all want to be popular. Stargirl would tell you that being normal is not the only way to be popular.

Christmas tree at Machida!!

I am living by myself in Machida now.
It is much more convenient than living in Chiba.

Book Report:Three men in a boat

This is the story of three men and the dog in a small boat: Jerome, George, Harris, and the dog Montmorency. They started to go on holiday at river. On the first night on the boat, they were trying to put the cover on the boat. They did not know the work would be so hard one. Because of Harris’ wrong work, George got angry at him and began to fight on the boat. Jerome could see that the two of them were fighting quite violently and find that they could not get out of the cover. He was told to stand and wait, so he did nothing. If I were Jerome in this story, I would have helped George and Harris regardless of what they said. I cannot turn a blind eye to those who are in trouble like Harris. He was almost dead. Also, If I was the author in this book, I would add the big black cat to the member of the boat. Montmorency does not like cats, but when he saw the cat, he seemed to be thinking that he had made a mistake because he was so afraid of the cat. I thought that it would be more humorous story if Montmorency get over this journey with the cat and later he could be nice to cats.

They left Oxford and were on the way to go back home, it was raining without stopping. They, at first, pretended they were enjoying it, but the raining made them unhappy and miserable. In page 82, George said, “I know we’ve decided tot stay and die on this boat, but there is a train which leaves Pangbourne soon after five o’clock. We could be in London in time to get something to eat, and afterwards we could go on to the theatre.” Although they wanted to be great adventurers, but actually, when it rains, they would prefer to be like in comfortable chairs in front of a warm fire. The reason why I chose this quotation is that I can really understand the feeling of George. I am a lazy and moody person, so that it happens to me sometimes to think better of what I was doing. When I was reading this book, I thought that I and George are similar in this respect.

1)Setting: In Great Britain at the river Thames from Kingston to Oxford in1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.
2)Point of View: The story told in the third person perspective.
3)Conflict: There are many conflicts in this story, the big conflict for the three men and the dog is when they decide to stop the journey or not because of nonstop raining, showing that braveness versus laziness.
4)Climax: The three young men and the dog go back to London by train giving up continuing adventure in a bad weather.
5)Symbol: Corporation between the three young men. They managed to do unexpected affairs by all means.
6)Irony: The three young men wanted to success this journey but they gave up eventually with a short bark of Montmorency showing that he agreed.
7)Theme: The adventure including hard time will be a great and enjoyable story to tell with laughing.

When they tried to open tin without tin-opener, they could not open it anyway.
So Harris threw it, as hard as he could, into the middle of the river. As it went down into the water, the three young men shouted awful thing s at it. Surprising thing that I found is that the three men are very quick-tempered. Harris is also careless person. Compared to me, maybe I do everything too carefully I thought. I really love the environment in this story. People are so busy and so pushed for time in our country. I think that having no time to think about them leisurely is a poor culture of our country.
I agreed with the author’s view of people. When Harris were angry at and shouting at George, the author Jerome thought that It’s better to let Harris go on shouting when he gets angry. Then he gets tired, and he is quite afterwards. It is a meaningless thing to do anything at him. “Add oil to the fire”, you know. After reading this story, I could think that I should lead more active life like the three men. Trying new things and meeting new people are very good things to make our life valuable, which I learned from this book.

Should Couples Live Together Before Marriage?

This is an essay which I wrote in IE Writing class!!!

The divorce rate was very low in the old days because divorce would have meant tragedy for women in humans’ society. Today, the divorce rate has increased. People’s senses of value have changed a lot in a surprisingly short time. Divorce is no longer a social taboo. People who got divorced once, twice or more are not an uncommon thing recently. Many couples ponder these days whether they should live together before marriage or not. Should couples live together before marriage? At present, couples should live together before getting married.

Couples have fights, quarrels, and divorce. Many grounds for the fights, quarrels, and divorces are from differences of each other’s sense of values, so living together before marriage sounds like a great idea of getting acquainted with each other’s sense of value. However, it is impossible to know the difference of sense of values to childcare during the cohabitation period. It is possible to know if only after the child is born after the marriage. Cohabitation is meaningless in this respect.

It is often said that couples in cohabitation will miss the timing of having one’s name registered. Sometimes, cohabitation erases the couples’ desire for marriage. Nothing changes after all because the only thing that would change is the one slip of paper. People even tend to think they should submit the engagement report. “Living together doesn’t necessarily lead to marriage. After five to seven years, 21 percent of most cohabiting couples are still doing just that – cohabiting, without getting married.” said Researchers David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead in a new study of the national marriage project at the Rutgers University.

On the other hand, there are also positive reasons why couples should live together before marriage. If living with someone before getting married makes a person realize that it would be a bad idea to marry their live-in partner, and then a future divorce can be avoided. People only have to separate if cohabiting is not going well. If people want to separate after getting married, they have to think legally and socially.

The vision in the future comes into view clearly when cohabiting. It is possible to think about the relation between two people more realistically like financially. Joseph M. Champlin says in the article: Cohabitation before marriage, that “Saving for a house, anticipating babies and providing for their children’s future college education now become more pressing issues.” Couples need to think about their future more realistically by cohabiting. Marriage can be practiced.
Taking these reasons into consideration, it is better for couples to live together before marriage. It is beneficial for couples to do cohabitation if marriage is the premise to them. Families will understand their child’s seriousness and follow them behind with their eyes.

Touching Things in Canada

My favorite country to visit is Canada. There are many touching sights, climate, and kindness of people that I was completely impressed when I experienced at the first time. Now, I would like to introduce you these touching things that I moved.

First of all, Niagara Falls is most popular place to visit in Canada for outsiders. The Niagara Water Falls located at the Niagara River which connecting two large bodies of water. It is 58 kilometers and it starts at Lake Erie flowing north to Lake Ontario. Water entering the Niagara River represents approximately 20% of the world's fresh water. The Niagara River divides two great countries Canada & USA. Just before the falls sites, the Niagara River splits to two and forms 2 waterfalls. The American Falls & the Canadian Horse shoe fall. In our day tour we will not cross the border to the USA, the Canadian side of the border provides a great view of both waterfalls. Peak numbers of visitors occur in the summertime, when Niagara Falls is both a daytime and evening attraction. The number of visitors in 2008 is expected to total 20 million and by 2009, the annual rate is expected to top 28 million tourists a year. The oldest and best known tourist attraction at Niagara Falls is the Maid of the Mist boat cruise, which has carried passengers into the whirlpools beneath the fall. You can see, hear, and feel the awesome power of Niagara Falls.

Secondly, because the climate in Canada is so particular, you can see many rare natural phenomena. When I had been in Manitoba province as an exchange student, I had wonderful experiences. In Manitoba, though it is going to be like 30 degrees in Summer, it is going to be -40~-50 degrees in Winter. Of course, you cannot stay in outside so long in winter, but you may see what you have never seen before. Do you know sundogs? It typically, but not exclusively ,appear when the sun is low, and the atmosphere is filled with ice crystal forming cirrus clouds, but diamond dust and ice fog can also produce them. They are often bright white patches of light looking much like the sun or a comet. I thought sundogs as a little rainbow around the sun. It was just wonderful and fantastic! You can see frost flowers which, I thought, looks like cherry blossoms. Frost flowers occur when there is very cold wind blowing over branches of trees, poles and other surfaces. It looks like rimming the edge of flowers and leaves and usually it forms against the direction of the wind. It can occur at any hour of day and night.

Finally, I was so impressed by the kindness of Canadian people.
As an exchange student, I stayed with a family in Canada for a year. They treated me as a real member of their family. Not only this family, but also their neighbors, school friends, teachers and people I asked for help to. I could not help feeling their love everyday life in Canada.

All of these – the touching view of Niagara Falls, frost flowers and kindness of people, I really liked Canada and I would like to visit there again to see those I have been impressed.
