Book Report:Three men in a boat

This is the story of three men and the dog in a small boat: Jerome, George, Harris, and the dog Montmorency. They started to go on holiday at river. On the first night on the boat, they were trying to put the cover on the boat. They did not know the work would be so hard one. Because of Harris’ wrong work, George got angry at him and began to fight on the boat. Jerome could see that the two of them were fighting quite violently and find that they could not get out of the cover. He was told to stand and wait, so he did nothing. If I were Jerome in this story, I would have helped George and Harris regardless of what they said. I cannot turn a blind eye to those who are in trouble like Harris. He was almost dead. Also, If I was the author in this book, I would add the big black cat to the member of the boat. Montmorency does not like cats, but when he saw the cat, he seemed to be thinking that he had made a mistake because he was so afraid of the cat. I thought that it would be more humorous story if Montmorency get over this journey with the cat and later he could be nice to cats.

They left Oxford and were on the way to go back home, it was raining without stopping. They, at first, pretended they were enjoying it, but the raining made them unhappy and miserable. In page 82, George said, “I know we’ve decided tot stay and die on this boat, but there is a train which leaves Pangbourne soon after five o’clock. We could be in London in time to get something to eat, and afterwards we could go on to the theatre.” Although they wanted to be great adventurers, but actually, when it rains, they would prefer to be like in comfortable chairs in front of a warm fire. The reason why I chose this quotation is that I can really understand the feeling of George. I am a lazy and moody person, so that it happens to me sometimes to think better of what I was doing. When I was reading this book, I thought that I and George are similar in this respect.

1)Setting: In Great Britain at the river Thames from Kingston to Oxford in1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.
2)Point of View: The story told in the third person perspective.
3)Conflict: There are many conflicts in this story, the big conflict for the three men and the dog is when they decide to stop the journey or not because of nonstop raining, showing that braveness versus laziness.
4)Climax: The three young men and the dog go back to London by train giving up continuing adventure in a bad weather.
5)Symbol: Corporation between the three young men. They managed to do unexpected affairs by all means.
6)Irony: The three young men wanted to success this journey but they gave up eventually with a short bark of Montmorency showing that he agreed.
7)Theme: The adventure including hard time will be a great and enjoyable story to tell with laughing.

When they tried to open tin without tin-opener, they could not open it anyway.
So Harris threw it, as hard as he could, into the middle of the river. As it went down into the water, the three young men shouted awful thing s at it. Surprising thing that I found is that the three men are very quick-tempered. Harris is also careless person. Compared to me, maybe I do everything too carefully I thought. I really love the environment in this story. People are so busy and so pushed for time in our country. I think that having no time to think about them leisurely is a poor culture of our country.
I agreed with the author’s view of people. When Harris were angry at and shouting at George, the author Jerome thought that It’s better to let Harris go on shouting when he gets angry. Then he gets tired, and he is quite afterwards. It is a meaningless thing to do anything at him. “Add oil to the fire”, you know. After reading this story, I could think that I should lead more active life like the three men. Trying new things and meeting new people are very good things to make our life valuable, which I learned from this book.
